Hoosier Park has been in existence for about 16 years, and was doing very well for itself for the first 12 of those. However, when Shelbyville opened Indiana Downs, a lot of the money made at Hoosier Park was relocated to their track instead. Since then the track has been struggling.

With new legislation in the works that would allow slot machines at Hoosier Park as well as Indiana Downs, the track could see a boost in revenue again. With the addition of the slot machines, the track would be able to offer larger purses again, thus attracting the better horses and more race fans as well as those that would come just for the slot machines.

The Senate is considering the new slot machine bill, which would allow them to add 2,500 slot machines to each track. It would also bring in about a thousand more jobs and possibly a new hotel as well. It would also bring in more businesses and support those that already exist. The trickle down effect from the slot machines is really too much to be able to put a price tag on, for they would benefit the track but also the town itself.

Not to mention the amount that the government would get, as the county would be looking at about $9 million in slot machine revenue and the state would get $150 million annually. This is money that would be put to good use, including much needed full day kindergarten programs. There is a possibility that the moral majority will win and keep the slot machines from being approved, but as far as many residents of the state are concerned, they think that since they already allow slot machines at French Lick, what harm can a few more do?
