Charity Bingo Could Start Seeing Losses

Charity bingo was first legalized in California in 1977, and that money has done a lot for the state of California. Proceeds have gone to everything from high school extracurricular programs to support for developmentally disabled persons. However, new rules and restrictions on how bingo is played could threaten those local fundraisers, and make it tough to keep many programs in place.

Until recently, electronic bingo machines have been allowed in many parts of the state. The government of the state has allowed for them to be regulated on a local level, although they do have pending legislation out there that would make them legal. The problem is that you have two types of machines, those where you play the machine and those where you play against other players. Opponents say that those where you play against the machine are simply slot machines and should be illegal.

Sacramento just passed a law that says that unless you are actually playing against a person, the game is a slot machine and it is illegal. Business owners in the city say that this new ordinance is going to close many of them down, and those that don’t have to close are going to end up losing much of the money that they raise. They say that the new machines do not raise as much money as the old ones, and for those that want to play the older “slot machines” they can simply go out of city limits to play them.

Many players say they prefer the ones where you just play the machine as it is easier to play and they don’t have to keep up with the calls. They say it is more relaxing, but if the Sheriff’s Department has their way they won’t be playing any electronic games at all. They say that the original form of the game is the only legal form, and is cracking down on the electronic ones saying that they are nothing more than slot machines.
