City Council Gets Injunction

The Philadelphia City Council and the residents of Philadelphia are trying to stop two casinos from coming into the city. They say that the Gaming Control Board did not take residents of the city into consideration when handing out the slot machine licenses. They say that the traffic alone will become a major problem, not to mention that residents don’t want the casinos that close to their neighborhoods, schools, churches, etc.

The state Supreme Court issued an injunction against the city putting a referendum on the May 15^th ballot, and that they would make a decision as soon as they got the legal briefs from both sides. However, residents are angered that the court sided with the casinos and the board as opposed to looking out for their residents.

Casino-Free Philadelphia members say that the decision was “outrageous” and that the gaming board should “hang their head in shame” for not allowing the city to do what was right for them. They say that the almighty dollar is what is most important to them, and they will keep this in mind on Election Day. They say that they hope the court will lift the injunction as they could not imagine them stopping them from their legal and constitutional right to vote.

The casinos of course feel that the court did the right thing, and that they don’t think that the city council stands a chance after the ruling. They said that they “ruled appropriately” and that the court will likely vote in their favor in the end. The city says that regardless of what the court says they will continue to fight the casinos coming to their neighborhoods. They say that they didn’t tell them they couldn’t come to Philadelphia, they just told them that they had to go to industrial areas and not in their neighborhoods – a request many find very reasonable.
