Crist Pro-Slot Machines?

With the various gambling and slot machine bills that have seemingly come out of the woodwork since Charlie Crist was elected Governor of Florida, one can only assume that somebody knows something about the governor’s position on expanding gambling throughout the state. Broward County has every reason to believe that slot machines will be allowed to loosen their rules and restrictions that they have had in place for a little more than four months, and others think that they have a chance in expanding the slot machines to the pari-mutuels in the rest of the state.

The governor has said that he is both for and against the slot machines. He has said that he does not want to see gambling take over the state of Florida, but he has also said that he won’t rule on whether or not he will approve them. He has said that he would view each of the proposals and see what their merits are before deciding.

Does this mean that he is pro or con slot machines? Or does this simply mean that he doesn’t want to alienate anyone by taking an actual stance? Governor Bush may not have made many people happy with his tirade against legalizing slot machines in the state, but at least we knew where he stood on the matter – with Crist it is anybody’s guess.

But with all of the bills that are going through, and the fact that one of them just passed a Senate Committee with almost unanimous approval, I would venture to say that the people in Jacksonville know that they stand a chance of getting slot machines and expanding gambling, even if the rest of us have not been told yet.
