Who Should Decide Slot Machine Expansion?

With all of the legislators that have benefited from the tribal donations to their campaigns, many are wondering who should really decide whether they get to expand their slot machines or not. It seems that many Democratic lawmakers have gotten donations from the tribes, and many think that the reason that Governor Schwarzenegger signed the compacts in the first place is because he didn’t want the tribes putting their money in his opponents’ pockets instead of his.

A recent review of their finances showed that they have received a total of $1.6 million from the tribes for their political campaigns. Many want to know that if they are essentially being paid by the tribes that they should not have a say in the number of slot machines that they get.

Critics want to know how closely the Democrats are going to scrutinize the slot machine bills, especially since it now seems that they are not going to bring in as much money as originally promised. Many of the expansion bills that came to them last year were vetoed when the Republicans in office and many believe this has to do with the fact that the tribes usually support the Democrats.

You don’t have to look any further than the sponsors of the slot machine bills – Senators like Don Perata received $900,000 from the tribes, two other freshman Senators got $540,000 from the tribes – and now they are all sponsoring bills from the tribes. It seems that there might be cause for concern because of the lack of independent senators voting on the bills.
