Excelsior Makes BidThere have been several bids on the expiring contract held by the New York Racing Association, and this week it was Excelsior’s turn to explain why they should be chosen. Steve Wynn, on behalf of Excelsior Racing Associates, said that the only way that you are going to get people to start participating in horse racing again is to make it exciting. He says that you have to add slot machines if you want to bring the people in. Wynn said that he and his group could make racing exciting – not just by adding slot machines, but by adding entertainment. He says that the group is looking to revitalize both the Aqueduct and Belmont, and possibly add slot machines to Belmont, where they are currently illegal. Excelsior is a partnership between Wynn, several real estate developers, and the Johnston family. The Johnston’s own harness racing in Illinois and would like New York’s racing to be the jewel in their crown. They met before the 8 member panel to give their ideas as to how to change the state of racing in New York. Wynn says that they can add an excitement to the tracks that no one else can. They say that with the slot machines and entertainment, that people will be flocking into the tracks. Governor Eliot Spitzer put together the panel that will make the recommendation as to who should get the franchise. Excelsior is already considered the front runner for the franchise, due in part to the money they can bring to it, the money they are offering for it, and the people they know. The last panel put together by Governor Pataki chose Excelsior for their top spot.
