No Fighting for Slot MachinesEach year bills come through the General Assembly trying to get slot machines legalized in Maryland. This year there was probably about a dozen that came through but not one of them made it out of committee. Every other issue seemed to come through and move on, but not slot machine legalization. One bill asked for slot machines to be legalized across the state at racetracks – but only a limited amount. They wanted the money to go to an Education Trust Fund, which would provide funding for school construction. There was another one that wanted the residents of the state to vote on whether or not slot machines should be legalized, and wanted it to appear on the ballot next November. Some of the other bills legalized slot machines only at service clubs like the VFW or American Legion. The Vessel Gaming Act would have allowed slot machines only at sea vessels that had been approved for such. Even though none of these issues got slot machines in the state that does not mean that it won’t happen at some point. However,
with a deficit looking to be somewhere around $1.5 billion, next
year may turn out to be a different case for the slot machines.
No one is willing to fight for them this year, but many of them
will next year simply because they will need the money in the
state. Unless they come up with a different way of bringing in
money for the budget, it will probably end up being just a
matter of time before slot machines are everywhere.
