Lawsuit Will Derail Slot MachinesHow quickly the slot machine law got pushed through the Kansas State legislature is a testament to how many people want slot machines in the state. Supporters got it from legislative negotiations to the statute books in less than a month – practically unheard of for any law. It is conceivable that at least one of the dog and horse tracks could have slot machines up and running by the end of the summer. However, if there are any kind of legal hurdles that they end up jumping through, they could end up looking at more like 2008 or 2009. The casino and hotel complexes won’t be able to be open until 2009 at the very earliest. They have to see how long the Kansas Lottery gives them to file proposals for the casinos – and they have to wait and see if any lawsuits get filed. There are bound to be legal questions, this they are expecting. However, if someone sues them, or tries to tie up the process with legalities, they could be looking at years before they are allowed, or even able to open. If all goes as planned, Ford Count, Wyandotte County, either Cherokee or Crawford County, and either Sedgwick or Sumner County will be looking at getting resort casino. They are also planning on Wichita Greyhound Park, Woodlands Track, and the Camptown Greyhound Park splitting 2,800 slot machines. County voters would have to approve the slot machines, and Crawford County already has.
