More Slot Machines for Maine

Hollywood Slots has just broken ground on their $131 million new facility in Bangor, and with it comes the feeling that this will only be the beginning of slot machine expansion in the state. It is easy to say that the slot machines in Bangor were an isolated incident, but with the latest round of Legislative paperwork coming down the pike it seems maybe it wasn’t.

Now the House and the Senate have initially approved slot machines for the Passamaquoddy Tribe – they want to add them to a tribal commercial racetrack in Washington County. The tribe has tried before in Southern Maine to get slot machines approved and was denied them, only to see Hollywood Slots get permission in Bangor.

Washington County needs slot machines, and it needs the tribe. It has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, economic status in the state. The tribe would be subject to the same rules and regulations as the Bangor casino, with some of the funding staying right in Washington County.

However, the governor has said that he would veto the bill if it comes his way because he is against expanding gambling. Now, that seems a little weird considering the fact that Hollywood Slots is expanding. But perhaps it is because the amount of money that is coming from Bangor is equal to the amount the governor wants for his transportation bond package. The governor had better get his act together, for if I was a member of the tribe I would cry racism and go to the feds to see if they could work me a deal instead.
