Maryland Says No to Slot Machines

The Maryland Senate has rejected a bid to bring in slot machines, saying that they will figure out another way of fixing their deficit. The Republicans put forth a plan that would legalize slot machines, but it was overwhelmingly voted down. This leaves the budget gap still needing something to help them fill it, and a spending plan that will add another $30.3 billion without ways to pay it all.

The Senate had previously voted to allow slot machines, but they say this current plan is no good for anyone, not even the state. They say that with the current slot machine plan it would have forced large tuition hikes at the state colleges, plus less money for public K-12. They were trying to avoid tax hikes, but even the most adamant slot machine supporters had to vote against the plan.

Several of the Democrats, who have been for slot machines in the past, voted against the plan, saying that because of the fact that they would get slot machines but no improvements for public education, the plan was “irresponsible” and could not be approved. Some said it was just the Republicans trying to make it look like they were trying to make improvements in the state budget, when really they weren’t.

The legislature is now going to have to sit down at some point in April to figure out a feasible spending plan, because many feel that disaster is imminent. They say that they are going to have to raise taxes because without the slot machines, and without other funding, there is no way that they are going to be able to make up the difference.
