Germans Not Allowed to Ban Online GamblingThe European Commission has stepped forward and told the Germans that they are to stop their attempts to ban online gambling. The EU told them that they were interfering with the free passage of goods and services from other states in an attempt to protect the monopolies that they had for gambling, and they will not tolerate it any longer. They were told that they will be facing legal action should they continue to operate the way they have been. The Germans have been trying to protect their gambling industry from the influx of online gaming, as they are one of few that offer it. The decision to allow betting at all is done on a state by state basis, and Germany is one of those that allow it. They were told that they have a month to change their draft treaty and allow online gambling, as they currently have a total ban on lottery and sports betting. They were told that it was “disproportionate” and that they could offer other options instead. It was suggested to them that they offer registration and identification guarantees instead. Both Britain and Austria have challenged Germany’s ban, as both allow online gambling and want to be able to offer their services in Germany. The EU said that by only banning online lotteries, casino games, and sports betting but allowing horse racing was inconsistent and unjustified.
