Philly Ballot Referendum Approved

Philadelphia City Council has approved a ballot referendum regarding the location of slot machine parlors in the city of Brotherly Love. Many in Philadelphia are happy about the measure as they are sure that residents will approve the law. They say that the locations that the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has approved for slot machines in Philadelphia do not take into consideration the effect that they will have on its residents.

The locations along the waterfront for the SugarHouse Casino in Fishtown and the Foxwoods Casino in South Philadelphia are both going to be located in areas that are already overcrowded and teaming with congestion, and residents say that they could not have picked worse areas. They got together and petitioned the city council to do something about it since the state was not listening to them.

The state stands by its choices, but residents say that they are only concerned with the casino industry and not with those that live in Philadelphia. They think that the additional traffic alone that would come from adding slot machines to those locations would be overwhelming for the city.

If approved, the referendum would stop construction of the two slot machine casinos, and would ban slot machine parlors from within 500 yards of any home, church, playground or school in Philadelphia. The Board says that if the measure passes they will sue, and unfortunately for residents state law will likely prevail over the rights of the residents.
