Rhode Island Was Taken

When Rhode Islanders voted against allowing Harrah’s and the Narragansett Indians in not allowing them to bring in their casino, they were not aware of all of the players. They followed their local and state leaders, as well as various other groups who all teamed together to “save” Rhode Island from the casino. Little did they know that it was actually the Mohegan Sun that was against the casino and was funding the opposition to the competition.

The advertising campaign that they spewed forth focused on the dangers to Rhode Island by bringing in the casino, it talked about how it would change their constitution to allow it – as it was essentially a private business, and stressed how much business it would take from the restaurants in the state. Everywhere you looked – TV, radio, newspaper – they all shouted the problems that Rhode Island would face if they let this “evil” in.

Even the Rhode Island Hospitality Association said that the casino would ruin local businesses because the casino could give away free alcohol, food, etc. and they could not compete with “free.” They urged voters to tell Harrah’s and the tribe that they could not ruin their state by bringing in their casino. Even the Providence Performing Arts Center jumped on the bandwagon saying that people would go see the shows at the casino and stop coming to the PPAC – thereby dooming it to closure. Mind you, Harrah’s said that they would work with the PPAC to ensure that this did not happen, but none of that was in the news.

However, it seems that it was all just funded by the Mohegan Sun to ensure that there would be no further competition from Rhode Island, and that they could count on the money that is currently coming through their front door. They were afraid that if Rhode Island brought in the new casino that they would lose some of their slot machine revenue – which they would – and thus convinced voters that it was in their best interest to vote it down. Unfortunately Rhode Islanders listened, and now they are out the valuable revenue that could have come from bringing in the casino.
