Sports Betting Not a Sure ThingThere has been some talk of legalizing sports betting in Delaware as a means to bring in additional funding for the state who is sorely in need of a revenue boost. Industry experts say that by legalizing sports betting, the state will be able to compete with the latest casinos coming in across state lines. However, gambling experts disagree. The report released last week in reference to the amount of money that they will bring in says that the state could be looking at an additional $70 million a year in annual tax revenue if they let their racinos bring it in. However, experts say that those numbers re inflated, and that they are assuming too much with those numbers. The report comes from the Video Lottery Advisory Council and it says that sports betting would bring in $9.3 million of the $70 million, but the rest would come from people who came for the sports betting but stayed to play the slot machines. Gambling experts say that the amount quoted is very “aggressive” and that they don’t find that people who play the slot machines are the same people who enjoy sports betting. They say that people who like to gamble pretty much stay to one game. Poker players play poker, slot machine players play slot machines, and sports betters only bet on sports. They also say that even if they get some of them to play slot machines after the sports betting, the idea that they would bring in almost $61 million is absurd.
