Table Games will Bring in More Taxes

With West Virginia lawmakers approving a table games vote it seems unlikely that residents in those counties will not vote to bring in the games. With the approval from the state it seems likely that voters will agree which will give more money to the state for their tax numbers. Many are excited about the possibility of the table games as they think that it will not only be beneficial for the tracks and the state, but it will also be profitable for the local merchants and landlords that are located in those counties.

Kanawha County Commissioners have already estimated about $1.3 million in annual revenue from the games, and the other counties should see similar numbers. Kanawha is considering a June 9^th date for their special election, and Ohio and Hancock counties are considering some time in June as well.

The racetracks will have some formidable opponents however, with several groups planning on major media blitzes to warn residents of the evils of table games and the expansion of gambling. The West Virginia Values Commission is already making plans to counteract the vote – as is the West Virginia Council of Churches. They agree that table games should not be allowed, and that the social ills that come from gambling cannot be discounted.

They say that gambling is a “hoax” on the public, and that it focuses on those who are ill prepared to handle the slew of problems that come from gambling addictions. They think that using gambling money as public revenue will ultimately be the state’s downfall as eventually the public will not be able to support the casinos, and the state will not be able to support all of those that are now addicted.
