Texas Considering Gambling Legislation

With many bars in Texas offering legal Texas Hold’em tournaments, it really seemed like only time would tell as to how long the state could hold out on bringing in legalized gambling. Right now if you want to play slot machines, or gamble, you can get a bus that will take you across the state line where you can play in any number of casinos. Gambling proponents have been trying for years to get gambling legalized, but their legislators have been dead set against it.

However, with bars offering it legally – they don’t charge cover fees, there are no minimums for drinks or food, but players can win money prizes – it seems that it would only make sense that gambling might have a chance at getting legalized. The only difference to that general rule is the fact that Speaking Rock Entertainment Center is one of those that offer the tournaments, but they charge an admission fee. The reason that they can charge a fee is that they are located on tribal grounds, and are owned by the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo Indians, and they are able to keep 10% of the pot. The governor says that they are completely legal because on tribal grounds it is considered a sovereign nation. But the tribe says that they only cover the replacement of chips with that money.

They wanted to bring in a larger slot machine casino five years ago, but the state would not allow it. However, with the new bills that are currently sitting in the legislature, there is a good chance that with their approval they will get to open it. Not only that, but Texas Hold’em Tournaments would be legal at all bars across the state. When the casino was open, it brought in $60 million in revenue and 800 jobs, and those that are pushing for the legislature to legalize gambling cite these figures to boost their cases.
