Tribal Racism in Maine

The Passamaquoddy Tribe has been trying to get a slot machine racino for about 15 years, and have been fighting with the state of Maine to try and get one. Originally they had set their sites on southern Maine, but the people there did not want it. So now they are trying for northern Maine, where the people of Washington County say they would welcome the tribe, their slot machines, and their jobs.

However, the tribe is fighting to get respect as well as slot machines. According to one legislator, the tribe is spoken of in prejudiced terms, and they are tired of it. Several legislators have been making racist remarks against the tribe. They have said things such as ''Indians are lazy and want a free ride,'' or calling them “drunks and addicts” who want to “gamble their lives away.”

They have also made other slurs including them calling them “welfare warriors.” The tribe says that they are proud of Rep. Gary Moore for telling them that this is how they were being perceived, and how they were being discussed behind their backs as they say most legislators will not even admit that racism exists.

They say that most people were surprised that the tribe was being treated this way, but the Passamaquoddy Tribe is used to being treated as second class citizens. They say that when they complain, people say they are just looking for trouble, but it coming from a Legislator – it gives it “validity.” However, even knowing this, the tribe does not want to make this a racial issue – they want to move forward and try to be positive, and will continuing showing the benefits that this will give Washington County.
