Expansion of Slot Machines Under Fire in Florida

House Speaker Marco Rubio is fighting the expansion of slot machines in the state of Florida and is not alone in his fight. He has the former governor of Florida, Jeb Bush helping him, and is rallying other members of the House to stand by him as he attempts to defeat any further gambling expansion in the state.

Gambling and slot machine enthusiasts have been gaining momentum in the state, by slowly chipping away at the state’s desire not to have slot machines. First Broward County legalized them, then Miami-Dade County legalized them, then Governor Charlie Crist signed a slot machine compact with the Seminole Tribe giving them the machines and specific table games.

Rubio has filed suit with the state’s courts in hopes of reversing that compact, as he says that the governor should not have the right to sign a compact without the approval of the legislature. Rubio, and his supporters argue that Crist was elected to office because he said that he would opposed gambling legislation that made expansion possible, yet he has signed or allowed four different gambling bills since coming into office. This is not including the Lottery expansion that he is counting on to balance his budget.

Rubio says that the biggest problem with the expansion of slot machines and gambling is that they are “predatory” because they use their economically disadvantaged citizens to fund their budgets. He says that by using those that don’t know any better, like “like the poor and the working class” they are taking advantage of those that cannot take care of themselves. He says that they are giving them false hope in making them think that they can win millions when really they have very little chance of that happening.
