Governor Will Not Approve Slot MachinesGovernor John Baldacci has made it very clear that he will not be approving a plan to bring in slot machines. The governor will soon be looking at LD 701 – which is a bill that the Legislature passed yesterday. It will allow the Penobscot Indian Tribe to run slot machines at their Indian Island reservation. The bill would let them run 100 slot machines on the weekends along with high stakes bingo games. The tribe says that they need the additional slot machines to make up for the bingo money that the state took from them by allowing slot machines at Hollywood Slots in Bangor. Both the Senate and the House have approved the bill, but Baldacci’s press secretary said that the governor would veto any attempt to expand gambling in the state. Once the bill is vetoed, it will go back to the House and the Senate where they can see if they have enough votes to override the veto. When the bill went to the governor the Senate was one vote short of the 2/3rd vote that they would need to overturn it. Many feel it is time the tribe was allowed slot machines, as it is their right under federal law.
