No Slot Machines in Budget

Governor Ted Strickland has made it very clear that he is not interested in seeing slot machines at racetracks. He has said that any attempts to bring a bill in front of him that would allow slot machines would be vetoed. However, some were still holding out that slot machines might make their way into the upcoming budget, but soon realized that this would not be the case.

According to House Democrats, Strickland’s budget does not have a proposal to put slot machines at the tracks in it, even though there has been a large push from the standpoint of both the Ohio Racing Commission and the race tracks themselves. According to a spokesman for House Speaker Armond Budish, the slot machines are not included as part of the bill not only because of Strickland’s aversion to them but also because there is no way that they could ever come into play in time to help out the budget over the next two years.

Many had thought that by bringing in slot machines to the state that they would be able to fix a hurting state economy, but Strickland and others are opposed because they say that not only are slot machines not the answer, but that they would bring in more trouble than they were worth. Budish said that he was open to a slot machine proposal, and some others in the government have said that they might approve a stand alone bill instead of trying to lump it into something else.

Residents have already voted three times against slot machines, and originally the Ohio State Racing Commission was trying to go around them and just get the government to approve them. However, Strickland says that this won’t happen as he would veto any such bill. He says that residents have made their minds clear on the topic.
