Strickland Opposes Slot Machines

Governor Ted Strickland has a real problem with the way that the Ohio Racing Commission is going about trying to get slot machines in their racetracks. He says that residents have made it very clear that they have no interest in slot machines coming into tracks in the state, and the fact that they are trying to go around residents to get them in is just wrong and he is vehemently opposed to it.

He is referring to the Legislature’s latest attempt to get slot machines in state racetracks. The people have voted numerous times on slot machines at tracks, and each time they have voted it down. Now, however, the commission is attempting to pass a bill that would allow slot machines at the tracks, but it would be legalized by the legislature without a vote from the public.

The slot machines would be operated by the state lottery and located at each of the state’s race tracks. Strickland says that voters have voted four times to not allow the slot machines at the tracks, and that to try and go around them is just wrong. He says that he is aware that some of the money would fund his education reform plan, but that they will have to come up with the money another way.

He said that slot machines would not be necessary to fund it and that there were better ways of funding things besides expanding gambling. He says that if any slot machine measure is passed by lawmakers he will most likely veto it as he finds it goes against the will of the people. He says that the people have spoken loud and clear and that going around them is simply wrong.

For their part, voters are outraged that the government would even consider it and they say that if the government passes such a law without voter approval they would be unlikely to vote for their representatives when next Election Day comes around. They say that they want people who represent their best interests, not their own.
