Columbus
Could Be Getting Slots
If a
bill that is currently in the legislature goes through, Columbus County
could be getting slot machines in their area. There are three
state senators that are pushing for the slot machines to come
through so that those counties that are having a tougher time
financially might be able to bring in the slot machines to boost
their revenue. The bill is called the North Carolina Gaming Act,
and it would change the way that these counties operate.
The idea
is that these Tier One, or poorer counties, that have an
intestate already existing in them would be able to offer slot
machines in their county. They also have to border another state
as a provision of the bill. This would bring in tourists from
other counties from these other states and bring in additional
revenue not just for these counties, but it would benefit the
state as well.
Columbus
does not have an interstate to speak of but there are many major
highways that connect the county to South Carolina which would make it ideal for
bringing in tourists from that state. However, there are those
in NC that are not interested in bringing in the slot machines
as they think that as a poorer county too many of their
residents would be tempted to play them. They think that the
proximity of the slot machines to these poorer counties is just
a way for the state to make more money as they know that they
will end up playing them.
