First Step Toward Slots

This is easily seen as the first step that Texas could take towards legalizing slot machines if a bill goes through that is currently sitting on the Senate floor. State Senator Juan Hinojosa, a Democrat located in McAllen, has authored a bill that would essentially legalize slot machines in the state. The bill would allow video lottery games – which are simply a form of slot machine – to operate in the state of Texas.

The bill would allow race tracks and Indian reservations to operate these slot machines if it is passed. He argues that with Texans gambling millions of dollars on slot machines in other states, they would be foolish to overlook this perfect form of revenue. He says that by allowing Texas to offer slot machines that they would be bringing in millions of dollars in revenue for the state, which would easily help out their failing budget. The bill would also bring in more than seventy thousand new jobs, which would span across forty different industry sectors.

With so many conservative groups still fighting against the legalization of slot machines, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top. Instead of it being a definitive no, however, there is much to be said for a year in which the economy is bad and their state budget needs the additional help – which means that there is a good chance that some form of slot machine might make its way into the state this time around.
