Boston Looking Into Slots

With the increase in property taxes that Massachusetts has been experiencing, legislators have been seeking a way to give their constituents a break. Chris Gabrieli, Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate, thinks he has found a way. He proposes to legalize slot machines and casino gambling in Massachusetts as a means of raising further revenue. He thinks that if residents are already going over the state line to play slot machines, why shouldn’t they have some there – keeping that income for their state?

Some estimates have the amount Mass. Residents are paying at out of state establishments are somewhere around $900 million and Gabrieli thinks that money should stay in the state to help reduce the property taxes, and give money back to towns for improvements. Democrats recently vetoed a bill to add slot machines to racetracks, and the Governor has vowed to veto any slot machine or any other kind of gambling bill that ends up in his lap. The state is already going to have to face it however, as an Indian tribe is seeking federal approval for a casino on tribal property.

Gabrieli’s argument is that the state already allows gambling with the state lottery, which is considered the most successful lotteries in the nation. He wants to create a Gaming Regulatory Commission that would allow for slot machines and casino gambling to be regulated. This would help offset the state’s property taxes, which have increased 32% in the last 4 years. Opponents claim it would prey on the poor, and Gabrieli disputes this argument saying that it is mostly middle-class residents that are crossing state lines to gamble on the slot machines now.

Other political figures support the idea of slot machines to be brought into the state, but not casinos.
