Broward Could Lose Slots VoteBroward gambling proponents were dealt a blow this week when an appeals panel passed judgment on the slot machine ballot vote. The panel stated that it was concerned with rumors of petition fraud, and if found out to be valid they ordered the invalidation of the slot machine vote. The facilities that were planning on the slot machines could be in a lot of trouble if the vote is reversed. The vote passed in Broward but failed in Miami-Dade. Opponents, including Governor Jeb Bush, were happy by the appeals court’s decision, as were various animal rights groups. They felt that the way the signatures were gathered was illegal, and that the petitions should be thrown out. It seems that the court feels somewhat the same way, allowing that if there did end up being improprieties that they would be eliminated and the vote invalidated. Proponents were not happy with the ruling, including the school systems that would see the revenue from the slots, and the cities that would share in the profits. They can appeal the ruling, and plan on moving forward while they fight for the slot machines. They feel everything was handled according to the letter of the law. They have already started investing and spending money in the project and will not give up without a fight. Back to August Index - Slot Machines Fan
