Call for Eliminating Slots

The State of Maine allows slot machines, and this makes a lot of people very unhappy. There is a group called No More Slots for ME that is looking to ban gambling in the state of Maine. They want it to go back to the original total ban of slot machines that was in effect until it was voted out in 2003. They are trying to get enough signatures to get onto the statewide ballot in 2007. They have a large following already, including former Governor Angus King.

Their concerns are simple: you bring in slot machines and gambling, and you bring in crime. They cite research that was done by David Mustard and Earl Grinols, in which they show that in areas that did not previously have high crime rates – once the slot machines were brought in, the amount of crime increased significantly. Their study shows that within two to three years after bringing in gambling, the crime rate would rise – thus, by allowing the racino in Bangor the state is asking for crime to rise in that area as well. It does not matter if you call it a racino or a casino, they both get 70% of their revenues from slot machines, and their study, as well as others, shows that those with a gambling addiction prefer slot machine gambling.

They have brought their concerns up to the Maine Gambling Board, and were told that there was nothing to worry about, and that the State of Maine would not fall prey to these types of behaviors – as they have programs set up to stop that sort of problem. However, when you check the figures, you can see that it is already happening. Hollywood Slots reports that betters are losing roughly $100,000 a day; then there is the case of the man who blew $23,000 in on facility – money he had embezzled from the company he worked for. These are just some of the examples they cite to show why gambling should be illegal.
