Casinos Back Crist for Governor

Coastal Development Corp, owned by Richard T. Fields, has written a check in the amount of $100,000 to Charlie Crist’s campaign for governor. Coastal Development Corp is the same company that was hired by the Seminole Tribe of Florida to expand its gambling business. Fields was instrumental in bringing several players together for the creation of the tribe’s very successful ventures The Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood and Tampa. The current governor, Jeb Bush, is opposed to the Seminoles expanding outside of those two venues.

If elected Florida’s next governor, Crist however, will have the final say in what happens with the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes, and will decide whether or not they will be allowed to bring in slot machines. Meanwhile, Crist has been touted all around town that he is a conservative and has no intention of allowing slot machines to expand in Florida. ''The compact negotiations, that's within the governor's office,'' said Erin Isaac, Crist campaign spokeswoman. ``When the general says he's against the expansion of gambling, that's just what he means.''

As this is not the first time Crist’s allegiance to the cause has been questioned, many are now wondering what his true stance on the subject is. He is taking money from the groups that want gambling, but keeps saying he won’t support the slot machine expansion. Christ’s opponent, CFO Tom Gallagher, has also said that he will oppose the slot machine gambling, and that he doesn’t understand why Crist is taking money from these groups. ''This is just more proof that Tom Gallagher is the only candidate that Republicans can count on to stand firm against the casino lobby,'' said Alberto Martinez, a Gallagher spokesman.
