Nothing Like a Little “Friendly” Competition

California’s government has given a monopoly to their tribes so that they are the only ones allowed to possess slot machines. You would think that this would pretty much end any fighting from the tribes, but not necessarily from other residents of the state wishing to get slot machines as well. However, the fight seems to be coming from within the tribes – not outside of them.

The tribal casinos are fighting over who gets what when it comes to slot machines. The latest argument comes from the Pala Band of Mission Indians near Fallbrook, where they want to overturn slot machine deals that were given to four other tribes. They have donated a half a million dollars to a ballot initiative that would reverse the decision to give them more slot machines.

The Rincon Band of Mission Indians says that the governor is imposing unfair fees in return for the slot machines, when the slots are their federally given right to have. These fees that they are fighting are similar to the ones that the Pala and several other tribes have agreed to.

The problem is that they are demonstrating a riff within the tribal community which looks like a weakness to the outside world, and may not be the image that they want to portray. They have this image of being the good guys against a terrible government, and a long drawn out ballot fight will change this impression. Governor Schwarzenegger has been very clear, however, no matter what happens the tribes will pay if they want slot machines.
