Eastern Shawnee LawsuitThe Eastern Shawnee Tribe has been fighting for land that they believe is theirs for a year now. The tribe has been trying to get thousands of acres of land that they claim ownership of, and had to file a lawsuit last year. They claim it was taken illegally - through the use of land deals and treaties that were unfair and illegal. They want the land so that they can open a new casino with slot machines. Last week they released Ohio as well as a group of other defendants, leaving only Lima as they are trying to get a slot machine casino located there. They then filed proposed settlements with a judge in Toledo. This did not make Ohio happy at all and now they want back in the fight. The settlement would give the tribe options on land for four different sites. Ohio thinks that this move is just a way for the tribe to get more land that is not theirs. They are claiming a historic right to the land that Ohio says is just another way for them to get another slot machine casino in the area. The state is arguing that the tribe does not have any rights to any of the land in Ohio, and want back into the lawsuit. Mason Morisset, the tribe’s lawyer, said, “We dismissed them. I don’t know why we would want them back.” Back to August Index - Slot Machines Fan
