Electro-Mechanical Slots

The old slot machines of the 60’s and 70’s were “electro-mechanical” and used a mechanism to stop the reels at random, and thus seem to be more predictable in terms of payouts than today’s slot machines.  However, this is not true.  They actually were not any more random than today’s slot machines, but they were less volatile in terms of payouts – as today’s payouts are much higher than they were then.

They all used “PAR” Sheets, or percentage of payout sheets, to determine long-term payback - so they used the calculation of the number of times each symbol appeared on each real. This is the same today, only the new slot machines use the number of times each symbol appears on their virtual reels.

Slot cheats of back then did use various instruments to “cheat” including light wands, and that ilk, but that becomes much harder by today’s standards. Because of all the checks and balances in place, it is tougher to cheat a slot machine. Back then it may have been slightly easier for the casinos to rig them as well, they could use markers to ensure that a certain wheel would not hit and thus ensure that a jackpot would not be hit. Today’s casinos are not as concerned with the hitting, in fact it is good to show that the slot machines do hit as it drives in more business  if people feel like they have a chance to actually win. It is quite common for slot machines to hit in the first 24 hours that a casino is open, and that is good for more business.
