Harrah's Slight of Tongue

A Harrah-s backed group is in a bit of trouble today, after they posted a web site stating how much money Rhode Islanders might save on their town’s property taxes – depending on how they vote on the proposed Harrah’s-Narragansett Indian casino. The problem is the numbers just don’t add up. They added a disclaimer to the site yesterday, after Edward Giroux complained that the public needed an explanation as to where the numbers were coming from.

Lawmakers find the site misleading at best. None of the facts and figures have been decided on in the deal, so they are not sure where Harrah’s is getting the numbers from. They wanted the disclaimer to state that if this measure were to pass, that these are estimates as to what could happen – and that nothing is set in stone. This is not the first trouble they have gotten into over it, they sent out a mailing as well that has many talking.

The mailing went out to residents promising “$144 million in constitutionally guaranteed property tax relief to Rhode Island's 39 cities and towns," and "$20 million a year directly to West Warwick." Since these are not numbers that have been agreed upon, lawmakers are trying to figure out where they are getting them from.

The Harrah’s backed group released a statement saying, “"This has been a campaign that has been completely straight-forward in bringing the facts to the people of Rhode Island,” and that "The facts are this: when this -- and it is our assumption again that when this is voted on Nov. 7 and passed -- it . . . will bring over 7,000 good-paying jobs and $144 million in property tax relief."
