Indian Tribes Making Money

The California Indian Tribes like the slot machines – they have been very good to them. Thus, in turn, they have been very good to California and to the politicians that benefit from all that goodness coming in. At some point the tribes were poor, and no one cared – everyone ignored them and pretty much hoped they would go away. But now that they are making money hand over fist on their slot machines, the politicians want their piece of the pie.

The tribes first asked to be allowed the slot machines as it was a way for them to help their own economy, and to make them self-sufficient. Which worked wonderfully for them, in fact, it really worked a little too well for some people’s tastes. The reservations are an entity unto themselves, in that they govern themselves, and the politicians and the state, etc. are supposed to leave them alone. But now that they have money, they have a little clout they can throw around – and the politicians can’t jump high enough for them.

The concern is that the tribes operate like private businesses, but also as if they were their own governments and one would be hard pressed to see the relationship between the two. The most important thing to remember is that if they are businesses then they get the rights that go with that, but also the responsibilities. If they are governments, then they need to stop contributing to political campaigns and agendas, as that is illegal. And to think, it all started with a couple of slot machines.
