Jefferson City Looking for Illegal Slots

Jefferson City has its hands full trying to determine how they are going to go about prosecuting slot machines throughout the state. There are many locations around that the slots are openly played – you stop for gas or milk and you could play the slots. Many fraternal clubs play them as well. But where do you draw the line, as statewide sweepstakes and poker games could come under fire next.

It has been estimated that somewhere in the vicinity of 5,000 slot machines run illegally in Missouri every day. Some are old video games that have had a makeover into a slot machine instead. The problem isn’t just the machines; it is the way they operate. The owners don’t pay any taxes on the money they bring in from them, and they machines are set up to cheat the players. Regulated machines are set up so that the player actually has some kind of chance of coming out on top, but unregulated machines can be set up however the owner wants to.

The owners also don’t have to pay any of the money back to the state, which hurts the state’s incoming revenue as well. The ones that are out in the open should be fairly easy to crack down on, however the police have admitted that they don’t want to go after the fraternal clubs.
