Lebanon Casino Still Fighting

The war between the Israel and Shiite fundamentalist group Hezbollah has claimed another victim – gambling. The Casino du Liban, one of the nicest places in Lebanon, is feeling the drain of the war. Most of their high rollers have called it quits, leaving the country as soon as things got bad. Even the seedier bars and casinos have felt the pinch. There is no one to play the slot machines, and those that are let are few and far between.

Even the “Loto” has been cancelled, for there is no one to play it. There are $2 million dollars waiting for its return, and they are hopeful that they will be able to return to business sooner rather than later. The main casino, Casino du Liban is still open, but is running at reduced hours (closing 4 hours earlier than usual), has less slot machines operating, and has cancelled its summer show. Only one of their three gaming rooms is still opening, and the private rooms are closed all together. With their high rollers gone, the slot machines standing empty, there is no one to play and thus to bring in the majority of their income.

The casino has been open since 1959, and has weathered much, including a civil war. But this last war is truly hurting them. Some of the other casinos are running under normal operating hours (allowed to stay open until 5 am), but others cannot compete with the lack of business. They are also hurt by the employees that have left as well; many of those from other countries have been evacuated to Syria and Cyprus, and are now working over there. Chances of them returning are slim.
