Legg Ordered to Give Up Slot Machines

The Washington State Gambling Commission is earning their money this week; they have set their sites on Don Legg, a 43 year old father of four, and are bringing down his slot machine gambling ring. The commission charges that Legg owns three slot machines and one Pachinko machine, which is illegal. They sent Legg a letter letting him know that he had 30 days to get the slot machines out of the state or they would be seized and destroyed. Susan Arland of the Gaming Commission stated, “"We did not make that law; the Legislature did…A slot machine cannot be in the possession of somebody in the state unless it is 25 years old or older and used for non-gambling purposes."

Understandably, they must follow the letter of the law, but what about Mr. Legg? He admits he owns the slot machines, but they are just for fun. He bought the slot machines years ago, and people play them when they come over – but just for fun. The machines only take tokens, and no cash is ever paid out. It just gives him and his friends something to do. Supposedly the commission had received an anonymous tip from someone, Legg thinks it is from the garage sale he recently had. He suspects someone saw them and reported him. His letter from the commission stated, “Although these machines do not accept coin, they are designed primarily for use in connection with professional gambling. ... You have 30 days from 7/19/06 to remove these devices from the state or destroy them and provide proof to the Washington State Gambling Commission."

Legg has sold two of the slot machines already, as well as the Pachinko machine, and is looking to sell the last slot machines. He says he has no choice. He needs to get rid of them in 30 days, which means he is selling the slot machines at a loss to himself. He originally bought them through eBay, and is disgusted that this is what it has come to.
