Macau Gambling on Itself

There is a small area on the southeast coast of China called Macau, and it has decided to get into the gambling business. It is not a large area, only totally about 16 square miles, but it contains the Macau Peninsula, Coloane Island, and Taipa Island. Oh, and one other thing, it has been bringing in a large amount of revenue from slot machines and gambling. There are some well-known names here: Wynn Resorts, the MGM Mirage and the Las Vegas Sands – all of whom have come cross the world to bring gambling to a very small area of the universe. It seems that it was a smart move on their part as last year it brought in $5.6 billion – which is more than Atlantic City brought in.

Atlantic City brought in $5 billion, and Las Vegas’s strip brought in $6 billion. Experts believe that by 2009 Macau will be bringing in somewhere around $11 billion – and that’s pretty darn good for such a small area. The Las Vegas Sands was one of the first ones in, and is now putting more money into the area. They are adding more tables, more slot machines, more of everything. They are also putting in 51 premium suites with pretty much everything your heart desires, including karaoke rooms – yes, in the suite. It will also have places for shopping, entertainment, you name it. And since it is a free port and sales tax is not charged, it truly is a haven for those shoppers who want to drop some serious cash.

The casino knows to bet on a sure thing, and Macau is definitely it. Their share price is up over 90% as investors have realized what they are up to, and their profits rose 62.7% over profits from the year before. Slot machines are truly the money makers for the casino, as they find the women come for the shopping and the slots – and they make a lot of money off of that combination.
