Maine Puts Hold on SlotsThe Maine Gambling Board has had some second thoughts about voting in gambling. They have ruled on a moratorium on any more expansion into the slot machine business. The board has seen the numbers as to how much people are really spending at the slot machines and it worries them that the numbers are so high. Some of the money could be coming from tourists to the area, but a large amount of it must be coming from Maine residents. “I support a moratorium until we know where we are going with gambling in the state of Maine,” said Peter Danton, Chairman of the state’s liquor and lottery commission - and board member. They have decided that the moratorium will stand for at least six months, and will be revisited twice a year. It will remain in effect until the board no longer sees a need for it. They did however; give approval to Hollywood Slots to renew their license for another year, and for their supplier of 475 slot machines. Other slot machine and gambling casinos want to make the break into the market, but for now will have to hold on getting that approval. The board is not looking to hurt anyone already approved, but will not be allowing any expansion.
