In Connecticut, in 1992, an Indian tribe by the name of the Mashantucket Pequots petitioned the government to open a casino on tribal land. That request was granted, and Foxwoods was opened. Between that casino’s slot machines and gambling, and another tribe’s casino, the Mohegan Sun casino, the small town of Ledyard has become a slot machine gambling Mecca in Connecticut. Between the two casinos, what was once an ordinary town has become a premier vacation spot for gamblers – enough of a vacation spot that it is not far behind the Atlantic Ocean in terms of vacationers.

It brings in an estimated $1.6 billion a year, and that is why other Indian tribes are looking to do the same. The Narragansett Tribe in Rhode Island is trying it; so are tribes across the country. Because of the amount of income that the slot machines in Foxwoods bring in, Massachusetts is now thinking they want a piece of the pie as well. Never mind all the problems that come with bringing in gambling, it seems to be worth the price of admission. When your state is bringing in an additional $400 million a year from said casino, why not let a few slot machines change your state?

Connecticut believes that they can keep a handle on it, that it will stay just where it is and not influence the rest of the state. However, it wasn’t even supposed to have slot machines, but once they saw the huge profit that slot machines bring in, guess what – slots are now at Foxwoods. With the announcement that Foxwoods was now teaming up with MGM Grand to create another casino, a $700 million development on their property, residents are scrambling to try and close Pandora’s Box. The new casino hotel will have 824 rooms, a convention center, and a 4,000 seat theatre. Local residents and officials were completely taken by surprise. According to Foxwoods, it is simply a matter of branding, but to everyone else, it means Vegas has just come to the Northeast.
