New Jersey Slots TracksGovernor Jon Corzine is in the news again, talking about slot machines. He think s that the state might want to follow some of the other states in putting slot machines into racetracks. Pennsylvania is just next door and they are doing it, so why can’t New Jersey? He thinks it would be a great way to bring in more revenue for the state. The casinos think it is a terrible idea – slots at the racetracks would mean less slot machine players in the casinos themselves. Corzine wants to put in Video Lottery Terminals, which look just like slot machines and behave similarly. He supposedly mentioned his idea in a conversation he had with some casino big-wigs and they were less than happy. Letters were written to the press by two southern New Jersey legislatures calling for Corzine’s slot machine proposal to be eliminated. “A decision to place VLTs or slot machines outside of Atlantic City could be devastating to the progress we are achieving in Atlantic City and could have a seismic impact on the entire New Jersey economy,” wrote Sweeney and Whelan. The casinos feel the same way. They would be competing with race tracks for the same slot machine business that used to just come to them. They feel that no new money would end up coming in to the state, but that the state would actually be harmed by the notion. They feel that bigger companies that are looking to come here will be scared off by the possibility of having to compete with the racetracks. Back to August Index - Slot Machines Fan |
