New Law for Tribes Sets DeadlinesThe Congress is trying to set limits for the tribes and their abilities to open slot machine casinos off of tribal land. There has been an increasing trend toward the limitations that they are trying to place on the Indian tribes, with the latest being a deadline on applications for new tribal trust land that was just proposed by Senator John McCain (R, Arizona). If McCain’s new proposal passes, tribes will not be able to build casinos with slot machines in other places than they already have. This will affect the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa as they are currently attempting to get land themselves. They are waiting to hear if they get approval for their Grand Forks Casino and if they don’t it could hurt their abilities to open a new casino with slot machines. The tribe does not seem concerned as they claim they have other land saved elsewhere, so this new law will not overly affect them. They claim their other plots of land will work just as well, just in case the Grand Forks Casino is not approved. They have one plot of land in Willston, N.D. that is just off of Highway 2 West. Another one is located between two major metropolitan centers - Minot and Bismarck. They claim that whether or not the compact with the state dictates if they could have their slot machines there or not does not matter to them, as they believe they can.
