Oster Resigns from CampaignRichard Oster of Barrington, announced he is resigning from his position as Chairman of the group “Save Our State.” He cited political differences as his reason for leaving. Former Governor Lincoln C. Almond has been asked to temporarily replace him. The group was formed to oppose the Narragansett Indian-Harrah’s casino proposed for West Warwick. It goes on the block in November. Oster felt that the rest of the group wanted to go a different route than he did, that they are completely opposed to bringing in a casino at all and that he thought there may be a little wiggle room in the idea. The Indian group wants to bring in slot machines, etc. in a large casino on Indian land. The group wants to ensure that no more gambling of any kind comes in. His replacement does not think that a casino would be good for the state under any circumstances. When the Governor left office there were two legal gambling parlors with 2,478 slot machines. Since the new governor has taken office, that number has increased to 6,853. Oster’s problem with it was that it shouldn’t be opposed outright, but that others should be allowed to bid on it as well. That if the reservation wants a casino that is fine, but they shouldn’t be allowed to just hand it over to Harrah’s. "I think we have too much gambling already," Almond said. "Rhode Islanders like to gamble, and I think our addiction rate is much higher than the national average. It hurts families." Back to August Index - Slot Machines Fan |
