P.E.I. GamblingPrince Edward Island’s largest racetrack has turned out to be a disappointment for PEI. The Charlottetown Driving Park was sold to the Atlantic Lottery Corp, which kept on the horsemen and added 225 slot machines, was supposed to bring in a large sum of money to enable the harness racing industry to continue to operate as planned. However, since its August opening, it has failed to do much of anything. Atlantic Lottery Corp had announced that they were planning on expanding throughout Nova Scotia, and that they had generated almost $4 million in revenue - $3.36 million just from the slot machine operation. However, the government is telling a different story; they claim that the racino actually lost $2.4 million during its first 7 months. It cost $6 million to operate the gaming room, as they have such a high number of employees. The report did also say that they felt those numbers could be turned around, as much of that was start up costs as well. They believe that once they have gone through a whole racing season, the numbers will even out more. Provincial Treasurer Mitch Murphy echoes that sentiment. He said that the operation has recently been taking in 96% of its projected revenue, and that the previous seven months it had been operating at 60%. He feels the numbers are definitely on the upswing. Back to August Index - Slot Machines Fan |
