Palm Springs Tribe Looking for More SlotsWhen an Indian Tribe wants to open a new casino, they usually have to sign what is called a “compact” with the state they are planning on doing business in. A compact is an agreement between the tribe and the state that maps out in detail what will be allowed and what won’t on the reservation, and in their casino. Under the Federal 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, they are required to enter into these contracts which give the individual state some say over what goes on in the casino. The deal signed by Governor Schwarzenegger and the Aqua Caliente Tribe of Palm Springs is such a deal. The tribe wanted more slot machines- and they got them. In fact, the tribe already has 2000 slot machines, but will now be able to have 5000 slot machines instead. The California region has greatly increased its number of slot machines since they approved gambling for California Indians in 2000. They now have over 15,000 slot machines in the state, and ten casinos. The Palm Springs Tribe is just the first of many that are looking to sign compact with the governor, many has submitted plans but have yet to receive the go ahead. Many of them are looking to increase their number of slot machines as well to meet the growing demand; however, Governor Schwarzenegger has not signed any deals other than the Palm Springs one.
