Peterborough on Short List

There are 31 towns and cities trying to get a new casino and Peterborough has made it to the shortlist. The final decision won’t be made until December, but the town is hoping that they will be one of the ultimate winners. If they win, it could mean an additional 400 jobs for the area. There are 16 casinos that will ultimately be built, so Peterborough feels like it has a good chance of being one of them.

The leader of Peterborough City Council, Counselor John Peach, says that this will be terrific for the town, as it would bring in not only a slot machine casino, but also a hotel, a business conference center, as well as sports facilities. He said, “It looks like we are one of a handful of successful authorities in the Eastern region, so if we do get the casino, people will be coming from miles around.”

Opponents are still fighting against the slot machine casino however; they do not like the image that they feel it will portray for their city. Resident and MP Stewart Jackson believes, “It is not the right image for Peterborough and I fear it will encourage people of low incomes to get hooked on gambling.” He also thinks the estimate of 400 jobs is way too high, and that the townspeople are being misled to want to do something that ultimately will not have any benefit for them.
