Russians are Gambling

Russia is in the news again – more problems with their slot machine gambling. The Russian gambling industry is one of the largest in the world, with a $5-6 billion annual paycheck. These are just estimates, and Alexander Lebedev, a deputy of the Russian Parliament, thinks that this is just from the Moscow casinos and slot machine halls. They have a strong opposition to slot machines and gambling in Russia, with only 19% of those surveyed (18 and up) thinking that gambling is a good thing for the country. Another 52% thought the slot machines should be reduced and limited to only select members of the country – with 26% calling for a complete slot machine ban.

Moscow has an enormous amount of the country’s slot machines alone. Gambler’s anonymous meetings have become commonplace due to the country’s growing population of those with serious problems. There are slot machines everywhere – the bakeries, the pharmacies, etc. The Russian Public Chamber calculated that Russia has one slot machine per 300 people – which doesn’t seem too bad, unless you realize that they are including the elderly and infants.

Opponents, even those in high places, are having a hard time getting the slot machines eliminated. The existing laws don’t help much, with them working against those that would like to see a ban on the slot machines. The current law allows for slot machines to be placed in pretty much any public place, and most recently the Supreme Court sided with the slot machine owners saying that some provisions in the Moscow Law makes it illegal to look for slot machines. If regulated, they could help those with a problem, and keep them away from children.
