Governor Jon Corzine is waiting for a bill that would ban smoking in the casinos. He has already publicly stated that he would love to see such a bill. “I’m in favor of an overall smoking ban,” Corzine told NJBIZ last spring. “If the bill comes to my desk, I will sign it.” This does not sit well with the casinos. If a smoking ban were passed their fear is that they will lose large amounts of revenue from their slot machines and gambling tables if people have to go outside to have a smoke.

There are twelve casinos in the state, and they fought Governor Richard Codey for the right to continue the smoking in the casinos. They won an exemption from the law that said there could be no indoor smoking. However, there is a new bill out there called S-1089, which would ban smoking in the casinos as well as everywhere else. Senator Shirley K. Turner has been pushing for the ban, and she wants it passed as soon as possible. She is hoping for it to be done and signed by the end of the year.

Others think it is premature to even be talking about it, since the last bill was just put into effect on April 15^th. They want to wait to see how the first ban goes before they start banning casinos as well. The businesses already having to obey the law don’t find it fair that the casinos are exempt. They sued the state claiming that it was “unconstitutional” for the casinos to have a separate set of rules from everyone else. The casino workers want the ban as well, as they stand there amidst all of the slot machines breathing in the second hand smoke. They want the ban passed.
