South Africa in the Gambling News AgainDue to an influx of illegal slot machine gambling, the South Africans are trying to come up with a solution for eliminating it. Something many have tried - and many have failed. The KwaZulu-Natal Gambling Board has decided to issue “route and site” licenses for limited payout slot machines. Four operators will get the first of the licenses - thereby allowing them to operate 1,000 slot machines. Club and bar owners will be allowed to operate them as well; they can have five slot machines per license. The National Council of Problem Gambling - Gamhelp - thinks that this is ultimately not such a great idea. Most countries know that by allowing slot machines in bars is going to lead to a large amount of gambling problems. Slot machines are literally the “crack Cocaine” of the gambling world, and by putting them around alcohol - you are looking for trouble. Gamhelp director, Raj Govender said, “Most first-world countries are taking a serious look at limited payout machines and it seems that in South Africa we are going backwards. Slots as they are commonly known are the crack of cocaine. They are highly addictive....South Carolina got rid of them and reduced the number of problem gamblers by 85% and crime dropped by 40%.North Carolina also got rid of them, as has Norway. Russia is on the verge of it. The Swiss banned them from bars a few years ago.”
