West Warwick Nothing But Trouble

Everywhere Rhode Islanders look these days they can’t help but see another ad on how much better their lives would be if they would only let Harrah’s build a casino in West Warwick. Harrah’s Entertainment is determined to get a slot machine and gambling casino into the town, and has spared no expense to make sure residents know they want it. They are trying to get a constitutional amendment that would allow the casino in, and are spending millions of dollars just to advertise the idea.

They claim they will reduce property taxes, provide jobs, and alleviate poverty for the Narragansett Indian Tribe. The lawmaker think that Harrah’s has gone a little too far, suggesting numbers and amount s that they will supposedly bring in, when none of that information has been decided on yet. Harrah’s says they will give millions to the state, with their web site touting actual numbers as to how much and to whom. Again, lawmakers are arguing that those numbers are misleading as nothing has been set in stone, including the casino itself.

Plus there is the issue of the other slot machine parlors that are already in existence. If the new Harrah’s casino is approved, and their customers start coming from the slot parlors – the state has to reimburse them for lost income. The Narragansett Tribe argues that the money that will be coming in won’t just be benefiting the tribe, but the state as a whole.
