Birch Back at WoodlandsRandy Birch is back at the Woodlands, something some people thought would never happen again. But since the track has brought in slot machines, it was only a matter of time before Birch’s services were needed again. There wasn’t enough revenue before, but there is now! Birch was a fixture at the tracks for seven years, before the advent of slot machines. Birch called the very first race at the track on September 14th of 1989, and stayed until he couldn’t anymore. Birch says that when the track first opened, they would see 10,000 people show up on a Friday night, but as more and more tracks got slot machines, and casinos started opening around Kansas City, the track was unable to compete. He says that he always knew that if they got slot machines that the track would come back, and he was right. He says that the slot machines enabled them to come back better than before, in fact he was full time now, which he never was before. He says that it used to be a lot of fun to work there as the announcer, but with the competition being what it was, it was just impossible to keep him on. But now that they have slot machines, management wants it to be a fun place to work again, and so Birch is back at the helm of announcing. He says that the slot machines were the best thing to happen to them, and that working there again was like coming home.
