Lawsuits Against Casinos

Most people would not consider suing a casino for their addiction to slot machines, but the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. has been sued several times. In fact, the OLG has settled all but four of its cases out of court – which could be why most people have never heard of such a thing.

In fact, the OLG puts aside roughly $30 million each year of its slot machine revenue to combat problem gambling through the use of prevention, treatment and research – but some say it isn’t enough. The OLG has been sued ten times by slot machine addicts who say that they were not properly protected against the slot machines by the casinos. The OLG chooses to settle these cases out of court, for all it would take is one court case where the casino is found to be at fault, and everyone who has ever played a slot machine would sue them.

The OLG offers a program to gamblers that would give them a way to keep themselves out of the casinos and away from the slot machines, and some choose to avail themselves of it, and others don’t. But experts say that more and more people are starting to feel that it is not enough – and that the casinos are responsible for slot machine addicts.

The program is a self-exclusion list, so that those that feel they have a problem can keep themselves away from the slot machines, but they are not always enforced. Some slot machine addicts say that they were able to get back into the casino after having signed the form, and thus it is the casino’s fault that they lost more money. Others say that they were on the list and were banned from the slot machines, but then the casinos would purposefully let them back in so they could get more of their money.
